Description
Utilux Bi-Metal Crimp Lug
The Utilux bi-metal lug provides a purpose-designed connection between aluminium conductors and copper equipment or connection points.
Each lug combines an aluminium conductor barrel with a copper palm. Utilux joins the two metals using a friction-welding process to create a strong electrical and mechanical connection.
These compression lugs suit power distribution, mining, industrial, infrastructure and electrical installation applications where aluminium cable must terminate onto copper equipment.
Utilux Bi-Metal Lug Features
- Designed for aluminium-to-copper terminations
- Friction-welded bi-metal construction
- Manufactured from high-purity copper and aluminium
- Pre-filled with jointing compound
- Individually packed in sealed plastic bags
- Stepped barrel outside diameters across the range
- Wide choice of conductor sizes
- M10, M12 and M16 stud-hole options on selected sizes
- Alternative configurations available subject to order requirements
The jointing compound helps protect the aluminium conductor connection and assists with correct preparation of the termination.
Utilux Bi-Metal Lug Sizes
Engineering Supplies stocks Utilux bi-metal crimp lugs across a broad conductor range, including:
25, 35, 50, 70, 95, 120, 150, 185, 240, 300, 400, 500, 630 and 800mm².
Selected sizes are available with M10, M12 and M16 palm holes.
Choose the lug according to the conductor size, conductor construction, connection point and specified crimping requirements.
For non-standard, compacted or flexible aluminium conductors, confirm cable and lug compatibility before installation rather than selecting by nominal conductor size alone.
Friction-Welded Aluminium & Copper Construction
Connecting aluminium cable directly to copper equipment requires a connector designed for the two different conductor materials.
Utilux bi-metal lugs use an aluminium barrel and copper palm, joined through friction welding. As a result, the aluminium conductor terminates into the aluminium section of the lug while the copper palm connects to the copper or compatible equipment interface.
This construction makes the connector suitable for applications where a conventional all-copper or all-aluminium lug would not provide the required material transition.
Stepped Barrel Design
The Utilux range uses stepped barrel outside diameters across multiple lug sizes.
This design can help reduce the number of crimping dies required across the range compared with using a unique outside diameter for every individual conductor size.
However, always use the crimping method, die set and number of crimps specified for the selected lug and conductor.
Typical Applications
Utilux bi-metal compression lugs suit applications including:
- Aluminium power cable terminations
- Switchboards and distribution equipment
- Transformers
- Electrical distribution systems
- Mining installations
- Industrial electrical equipment
- Utilities
- Renewable energy projects
- Infrastructure
- Commercial electrical installations
