Description

Cembre HNKE4 Crimping Tool

In short, the Cembre HNKE4 crimping tool is a professional mechanical hand crimper for wire ferrules and end sleeves from 0.5 to 4mm².

Part of Cembre’s CRIMPSTAR® range, it produces a trapezium-shaped crimp on compatible insulated and uninsulated end sleeves. As a result, its compact manual design suits switchboard construction, control panels and electrical maintenance work.

HNKE4 Ferrule Crimper Features

Key features include:

  • Crimp range from 0.5–4mm²
  • Designed for wire ferrules and end sleeves
  • Trapezium crimp geometry
  • Manual mechanical operation
  • CRIMPSTAR® series
  • Treated steel crimping jaws
  • Factory-set ratchet mechanism
  • Automatic handle opening after the crimp cycle
  • Emergency release lever
  • Compact hand-tool construction
  • 516g operating weight
  • 236mm overall length

The ratchet controls the closing cycle, keeping the handles engaged until the crimp reaches the required closure. If needed, the emergency release lets the operator reopen the jaws before completing the crimp.

Ferrule and End Sleeve Applications

The HNKE4 suits ferrules used to terminate flexible copper conductors before connection into compatible terminal blocks, switchgear or electrical equipment. In particular, smaller conductor ferrules commonly used in control and instrumentation wiring fall directly within its 0.5–4mm² working range. Typical applications include:

  • Switchboards
  • Control panels
  • PLC cabinets
  • Instrumentation wiring
  • Industrial machinery
  • Terminal blocks
  • OEM equipment
  • Flexible conductor terminations
  • Electrical maintenance
  • Panel building

Trapezium Crimp Profile

Likewise, the HNKE4 forms a trapezium crimp around the ferrule barrel. During compression, the tool shapes the end sleeve around the conductor strands, so the prepared conductor can then enter a compatible terminal connection as a compact termination. Specifically, Cembre lists trapezium geometry for the HNKE4.

Ratchet-Controlled Crimping

Additionally, Cembre equips the tool with a factory-set ratchet mechanism. To crimp: first select the correct ferrule for the conductor size, then strip the conductor to the specified length without damaging the strands.

Next, position the ferrule in the correct crimping aperture and fully insert the conductor, then close the handles until the ratchet completes its cycle. Importantly, Cembre’s current HNKE instructions also state that the tool must not be used on live conductors.

Insulated and Uninsulated Ferrule Compatibility

Cembre’s HNKE-series instructions describe the tools for compression of both bare and pre-insulated end sleeves. The HNKE4 can therefore form part of a standard ferrule-tool setup for compatible insulated wire ferrules, uninsulated end sleeves and selected twin ferrules, including selected PKT twin ferrules in smaller twin-conductor sizes. In every case, always match the ferrule type, conductor size and required crimp aperture before installation.

HNKE4 vs HNKE16 vs HNKE50

Cembre divides the CRIMPSTAR ferrule tools into three size ranges:

  • HNKE4 — 0.5–4mm²
  • HNKE16 — 4–16mm²
  • HNKE50 — 25, 35 and 50mm²

As a result, HNKE4 covers smaller control and instrumentation conductors, HNKE16 extends into larger flexible cable sizes, and HNKE50 covers the large 25–50mm² end-sleeve range.

HNKE4 vs Other Cembre Crimping Tools

The HNKE4 is specifically a ferrule/end-sleeve crimper. It shouldn’t be confused with:

  • HNN Series — pre-insulated electrical terminals
  • HN Series — uninsulated electrical terminals and connectors
  • HNKE Series — ferrules and end sleeves

In other words, conductor size alone doesn’t determine the correct crimper — the connector or ferrule type must also match the tool application.
