Description
Raytech Magic Joint Y Branch Cable Joint
Raytech Magic Joint Y provides a cast-gel solution for creating branch connections in 0.6/1kV extruded cables.
The joint uses two impact-resistant plastic shells that form a Y-shaped enclosure around the cable connection. Once assembled, the enclosure is filled with two-component Raytech Magic Gel.
As a result, the completed joint provides electrical insulation and environmental sealing while remaining accessible for future maintenance. Raytech rates the system IP68 and confirms that it can be installed underground or fully submerged.
Magic Joint Y Features
Key features include:
- Y-shaped branch cable joint
- Suitable for 0.6/1kV extruded cables
- Filled with Raytech Magic Gel
- IP68 protection
- Fully submersible
- Suitable for direct burial
- Suitable for pits and cable ducts
- Re-enterable after installation
- Flexible gel insulation
- Fast gel cross-linking
- Approximately 10-minute gel setting time at 23°C
- Operating temperature up to 90°C
- Installation temperature from -15°C to +55°C
- Halogen-free gel
- UL94-HB gel classification
Furthermore, the flexible gel can absorb movement and external impact without behaving like a hard-setting resin. Raytech also states that the joint remains re-enterable after long periods in service.
Available Magic Joint Y Sizes
Engineering Supplies currently stocks three sizes:
| P/N | 1 Core Through | 1 Core Branch | 2 Core Through | 2 Core Branch | 3 Core Through | 3 Core Branch | 4 Core Through | 4 Core Branch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MAGICJOINTY006 | 4–50mm² | 4–50mm² | 4–10mm² | 4–10mm² | 2.5–6mm² | 2.5–6mm² | 2.5–6mm² | 2.5–6mm² |
| MAGICJOINTY025 | 50–150mm² | 50–150mm² | 10–25mm² | 10–25mm² | 6–25mm² | 6–16mm² | 6–25mm² | 6–10mm² |
| MAGICJOINTY095 | 120–400mm² | 95–240mm² | 25–95mm² | 16–50mm² | 25–95mm² | 16–50mm² | 25–95mm² | 10–50mm² |
These ranges match both your current WooCommerce variations and Raytech’s technical data.
Cable Diameter & Joint Dimensions
Raytech also specifies maximum cable diameters for the through and branch sides:
| Joint | Through Cable OD | Branch Cable OD | Joint Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magic Joint Y6 | 8–27mm | 8–27mm | 180 × 90mm |
| Magic Joint Y25 | 8–32mm | 8–32mm | 220 × 105mm |
| Magic Joint Y95 | 15–42mm | 8–32mm | 315 × 115mm |
Therefore, conductor cross-section alone should not determine joint selection. The number of cores, through conductor size, branch conductor size and cable outside diameter all need to suit the selected joint.
Through & Branch Cable Selection
Magic Joint Y uses different allowable ranges for the through cable and branch cable.
For example, MAGICJOINTY095 accepts a single-core copper through conductor from 120–400mm², while the corresponding branch range is 95–240mm².
Likewise, a four-core MAGICJOINTY095 installation allows 25–95mm² through but only 10–50mm² branch.
Consequently, it is important to check both sides of the branch rather than selecting the enclosure from the main cable alone.
IP68 Underground Branch Joint
Raytech specifies Magic Joint as IP68, fully submersible and suitable for underground use.
Typical applications include:
- Underground cable branches
- Cable pits
- Cable ducts
- Outdoor electrical systems
- Mining installations
- Utility networks
- Infrastructure
- Industrial plants
- Pump and water infrastructure
- Submerged electrical connections
Correct cable preparation, connection hardware and installation remain essential to the performance of the completed system.
Re-Enterable Magic Gel Joint
The joint uses the same flexible insulating technology found in Raytech Magic Gel.
Unlike a rigid casting resin, the cross-linked gel remains soft. Therefore, technicians can reopen the enclosure and access the connection for testing, inspection or modification.
In addition, Raytech states that the material remains re-enterable even after extended periods of operation.
Fast Magic Gel Installation
Raytech specifies a straightforward installation process.
First, complete the conductor connections and position them correctly inside the Y enclosure. Next, close the joint shell around the cables.
The Magic Gel components can then be mixed and poured into the enclosure. At 23°C, Raytech specifies approximately 10 minutes for the gel to cross-link.
As a result, the system avoids the long curing times associated with some traditional jointing compounds.
Magic Joint Y vs Straight Magic Joint
Magic Joint Y is designed specifically for a branch connection.
Where two cables need to be joined in-line instead, use the Raytech Magic Joint Straight Cable Joint.
Therefore:
Magic Joint Straight – in-line cable connection
Magic Joint Y – Y-shaped through-and-branch connection

Copper Conductor Applications
The three Magic Joint Y sizes currently stocked by Engineering Supplies are specified for copper cables.
Raytech also manufactures a larger Magic Joint Y240, which is suitable for selected copper and aluminium cable applications. However, that model is not currently listed as a variation on this Engineering Supplies page. Raytech specifies Y240 up to 630mm² in selected configurations.
