Type A full tension sleeves for AAC conductors
Utilux Type A full tension sleeves join all aluminium conductors (AAC) in overhead transmission lines. Their tubular aluminium alloy body forms a full tension splice when matched to the conductor and installed with the specified tooling. In addition, a centre barrier separates the conductor ends inside each sleeve.
For convenience, each sleeve comes pre-packed with jointing compound in an individual sealed plastic bag. Also, Utilux specifies hexagonal or indent crimps for this range. However, the correct die and crimping procedure depend on the conductor and sleeve combination. Therefore, check those details before starting the joint.
Type A full tension sleeve sizes
For reference, the table below follows the Utilux reference manual. For clarity, all dimensions are in millimetres. In particular, the outside diameter describes the sleeve body; the conductor diameter range describes the conductor that enters it.

Selection check: The current ordering labels for FT61A, FT68A, FT80A and FT94A differ from the Utilux manual. Those labels show 14–16, 16.5–19.5, 20–21.75 and 20–24.75 mm respectively. Therefore, please select by part number and confirm the conductor match with Engineering Supplies before ordering any of these four sizes.
Check the conductor and tooling
- First, identify the AAC conductor, including its strand arrangement and overall diameter.
- Then match the conductor to the sleeve part number. However, diameter alone does not establish the full installation requirements.
- Next, check the die code and crimping instructions for that exact combination. The Utilux manual includes conductor selection tables in Appendix A.
- Finally, confirm that the joint and installation method meet the requirements of the line project.
This Type A range suits AAC conductors. For other conductor constructions, review the Type R full tension sleeves and confirm the required fitting with the team. However, do not select a sleeve solely because its dimensions appear similar.
