Utilux full tension sleeves: Type R
Utilux designed Type R full tension sleeves for splices in overhead transmission lines. The range suits conventional or smooth-body ACSR, all-aluminium and all-aluminium-alloy conductors. In addition, these tubular aluminium alloy fittings include a centre barrier.
First, check the conductor construction and outside diameter to select the exact FT part number. Also, match the sleeve to the approved crimping die and tool. However, a diameter match alone does not confirm the correct splice for every conductor.

The first five rows follow the Utilux Type R datasheet. The FT80R dimensions also appear on page 17 of the Engineering Supplies catalogue.
However, the existing variation labels for FT61R, FT68R and FT80R differ from these catalogue ranges. Therefore, select by the full SKU and confirm your conductor with us before ordering these three sizes. Also, use the table to distinguish conductor diameter from the outside diameter of the sleeve.
Check the conductor construction
- AAC means all-aluminium conductor.
- AAAC means all-aluminium-alloy conductor.
- ACSR means aluminium conductor, steel reinforced.
- Also, check the steel content when selecting a sleeve for ACSR.
Utilux bases the stated diameter ranges on conductors with a high aluminium-to-steel ratio. However, a high steel-to-aluminium ratio needs a specific recommendation from Utilux. So, send the strand construction or conductor code when requesting a selection check.
Crimp tooling and preparation
First, check Appendix A in the Utilux reference manual for the conductor and die combination. Then follow the installation instructions for that combination. For ACSR cable, the Type R datasheet instructs users to remove excess grease from the steel core without using solvent.
