Description
Raytech Magic Box IP68 Connection Box
Raytech Magic Box provides a complete gel-filled electrical connection system for underground, outdoor and submerged applications.
Each kit combines an electrical enclosure with Raytech Magic Fluid insulating gel, cable glands and closing plugs. Once the installer completes the electrical connection, the gel fills the enclosure and surrounds the internal components.
As a result, the finished system provides electrical insulation and environmental protection while still allowing future access to the connection.
Magic Box Features
The Magic Box range offers:
- IP68 protection
- Magic Fluid insulating gel included
- Three cable glands included
- Closing plugs included
- Enough gel to fill the enclosure
- Re-enterable connection
- Underground installation capability
- Fully submerged installation capability
- Horizontal or vertical filling
- Seven enclosure sizes
- Maximum system operating temperature of 90°C
- Halogen-free insulating gel
- UL94-HB gel classification
In addition, the range covers several enclosure sizes and cable-entry capacities. Therefore, installers can select a box that suits both the connection and cable outside diameter.
Available Raytech Magic Box Sizes
Engineering Supplies stocks the following sizes:
| Part Number | Max. Cable OD | Cable Glands | Box Dimensions |
|---|---|---|---|
| MAGICBOX65 | 22mm | 3 × PG16 | Ø65 × 35mm |
| MAGICBOX80 | 22mm | 3 × PG16 | Ø80 × 40mm |
| MAGICBOX100 | 20mm | 3 × M25 × 1.5 | 100 × 100 × 50mm |
| MAGICBOX120 | 20mm | 3 × M25 × 1.5 | 120 × 80 × 50mm |
| MAGICBOX150 | 26mm | 3 × M25 × 1.5 | 150 × 110 × 70mm |
| MAGICBOX190 | 26mm | 3 × M25 × 1.5 | 190 × 140 × 70mm |
| MAGICBOX240 | 26mm | 3 × M25 × 1.5 | 240 × 190 × 90mm |
Because cable-entry capacity varies between models, check the cable outside diameter before selecting the enclosure. Furthermore, allow enough internal space for the connector, terminals and cable arrangement.
What Does the Magic Box Kit Include?
Each Magic Box kit contains the main components required to create a gel-filled electrical enclosure:
- Electrical box
- Enclosure cover
- Three cable glands
- Closing plugs
- Raytech Magic Fluid insulating gel
Therefore, the installer does not need to purchase the enclosure and insulating filler separately.
However, the kit does not determine the electrical connection method inside the box. Instead, select terminals, connectors or other connection hardware to suit the conductor material, size and application.
IP68 Electrical Connection Protection
Raytech rates the completed system to IP68 when installers assemble it correctly.
Consequently, Magic Box suits locations where electrical connections may encounter water, moisture or dust.
Typical applications include:
- Underground electrical connections
- Cable pits
- Outdoor electrical installations
- Garden and landscape lighting
- Electric gates
- Industrial equipment
- Utilities
- Infrastructure
- Mining sites
- Pumps and water infrastructure
- Submerged electrical connections
For example, installers can use the system where a conventional dry junction box may not provide the required environmental protection.
Correct installation remains important, however. Cable glands, cable diameters, internal connections and enclosure assembly must all suit the application.
Re-Enterable Gel-Filled Connection
A major advantage of Magic Box is re-entry after installation.
Unlike a hard-setting casting resin, Magic Fluid remains accessible. Therefore, technicians can reopen the box and reach the electrical connection for testing, inspection or modification.
This feature can simplify future maintenance. In addition, it avoids permanently embedding the connection inside a hard resin block.
Horizontal & Vertical Installation
Installers can fill Magic Box in either horizontal or vertical orientations.
First, prepare the required cable entries and install the cable glands. Next, insert the cables and complete the electrical connection inside the enclosure.
After that, add the supplied Magic Fluid according to Raytech’s installation instructions. Finally, close the enclosure to complete the protected connection.
As a result, the system provides useful installation flexibility where site conditions make a conventional horizontal pour difficult.
Magic Fluid Electrical Insulation
Magic Box uses Raytech Magic Fluid rather than the separately sold Magic Gel product.
The insulating material surrounds cables, terminals and connectors inside the enclosure. In addition, its fluid characteristics allow it to reach spaces around irregularly shaped components.
Raytech specifies an operating temperature range of -60°C to +200°C for the gel itself. However, the complete Magic Box system has a maximum stated operating temperature of 90°C.
Therefore, use the 90°C system rating when assessing the complete Magic Box installation.
Magic Box vs Magic Joint
Magic Box provides a general-purpose enclosure for electrical connections and junctions.
In comparison, Raytech Magic Joint provides a purpose-designed system for straight in-line cable joints.
Where the installation requires a branch connection instead, see Raytech Magic Joint Y.
Therefore:
Magic Box – general electrical connection enclosure
Magic Joint Straight – in-line cable joint
Magic Joint Y – through-and-branch cable joint
Choosing the correct system depends on the required cable arrangement and connection method.
