Spiral Vibration Dampers

In Stock

PLP spiral vibration dampers help reduce wind-induced conductor vibration at supports and deadend positions. The high-impact, UV-resistant PVC construction resists corrosion.

Description

PLP spiral vibration dampers

PLP spiral vibration dampers reduce cable vibration near tangent supports and deadend positions. The SVD range helps control wind-induced vibration in overhead conductors. These dampers use high-impact, UV-resistant PVC and resist corrosion.

This page offers three sizes for conductor diameters from 8.30 to 19.30 mm. However, each part covers its own defined range. Therefore, check the conductor diameter and full part number before choosing a damper.

Spiral vibration damper sizes

Store SKUPLP part numberConductor diameter (mm)Colour code
PLPSVD0104SVD-01048.30–11.74Black
PLPSVD0105SVD-010511.75–14.30Yellow
PLPSVD0106SVD-010614.31–19.30Green

The colour code identifies the size; it does not describe the colour of the whole PVC body. For example, SVD-0105 has a yellow code and covers 11.75–14.30 mm. Use the confirmed conductor diameter when selecting between adjacent ranges.

Span length and standard quantities

PLP publishes the following standard SVD quantities by span length. These are quantities for the span, rather than a pack size or a quantity for each end.

Span length (m)Standard SVD quantity
0–2442
245–4884
489–7326
733–9768
977–122010

However, span length is only part of the selection. Line design, temperature, conductor tension, wind exposure and local vibration history also affect the protection required. Consequently, confirm the arrangement for the actual line before ordering the final quantity.

Check the application conditions

  • First, identify the conductor and its outside diameter.
  • Then record the span length, support arrangement and conductor tension.
  • Next, note exposed terrain, crossings, warning spheres and any known vibration issues.
  • Finally, confirm the damper size, quantity and placement using the applicable PLP guidance.

PLP calls for specific recommendations for flat open terrain, river or gully crossings, tensions above 20% of ultimate tensile strength, and spans with aerial warning spheres. Therefore, refer these conditions to the team when requesting selection help.

Installation guidance and documents

PLP specifies fitting the dampers directly to the conductor or shield wire, clear of rods and attachment hardware. In addition, its guidance limits a grouped set to three dampers because larger groups can bind and reduce performance. Follow the full manufacturer instructions for the required clearance and arrangement.

You can find the size table and standard quantity guide on printed page 63 of the PLP distribution catalogue. The three listed sizes also appear on printed page 132 of the Engineering Supplies catalogue.
